Five Reasons why OLED is the better light source for you

OLED lighting is a brand new and continually improving piece of technology. Here are some of the reasons why, as a lighting solution, we know it is the better option for you.

1. Like the soft morning sun or the fading summer dusk, OLED light is the closest to natural sunlight available on the market

OLED, LED sunlight comparision

When compared to other light sources, OLED lighting has a spectral power distribution closest to natural sunlight. With an exceptionally high Colour Rendering Index (CRI), its light is emotionally comforting and ideal for locations where good quality lighting is needed and natural light unavailable.

Another advantage that OLEDs have when compared to other light sources is their use of the latest generation of white light; OLEDs are an RGB light source. What this means is that objects illuminated by OLEDs appear highly saturated over all primary colours and therefore very natural as if illuminated by sunlight. White LEDs for example only use blue and yellow so that red objects for instance will appear slightly pale and more artificial to the observer. Why not test this for yourself?

Compared to LEDs, the blue light that OLEDs emit is very close to sunlight without the peak at around 430nm. A lot of research into human physiology has identified that peak can result in the so called blue light hazard, meaning that a high share of blue light in artificial light sources actually has a negative effect on the human metabolism. For further reading, we suggest David C. Holzman’s article on the topic.

2. The OLED panels produce warm and pleasant light suitable for even the most sensitive of eyes

As OLEDs are surface light emitters OLEDs, it light is naturally diffusive. Compared to other light sources, OLEDs can be looked at directly without experiencing glare or even harming the human eye – reflectors, shades or additional diffusers are not necessary.

This astounding effect offers a whole range of new options of how lighting can be incorporated into living spaces and has the potential to revolutionize the way artificial lighting is used. Comparisons on brightness should therefore focus on the finished luminaire rather than the actual light source.

3. Your green conscience can be clear

Unlike energy saving bulbs for instance, no mercury or other hazardous substances are used in the manufacture of OLEDs so you can definitely breathe easy.

Compared to traditional light sources, OLEDs consume very little energy. Considering that the average household uses 10% of its electricity for artificial lighting, OLEDs have great potential to reduce consumption and therefore reduce electricity bill. This is best illustrated with an example:

Übliche Leselampe
Here you can see a traditional reading lamp with a 40W bulb. Based on an average electricity price of 27 ct/KWh and 3h usage per day, this lamp would cost 10.80 EUR/ year purely on electricity.
OLED-Lampe Sky
OLED-based reading lamp has a consumption of 4.25W offering nearly 90% energy saving. Using the same price and consumption calculation for the OLED lamp, electricity costs would actually shrink to 1.15 EUR/year.

4. Unleash your inner creativity with the revolutionary design options OLEDs offer

The ultra-light and flexible materials used for the OLED panel weighs just a few grams, enabling endless design possibilities not seen before. Furthermore, the natural diffused light allows open use of the light source; ideal for applications with a minimum distance between the light source and the observer.

OLEDs also produce very little heat (< 35 ° C). This outstanding feature allows not only the waiving of previously indispensable cooling elements, but also the use of sensitive materials such as wood or fabric.

5. No more dark corners with the OLED lights

OLED-panels can be printed on directly using screen printing for instance.

OLEDs are surface light emitters offering an even light distribution. This feature avoids the shading effect caused by point-light sources like LEDs when used to illuminate surfaces or as a back-light. Combined with other characteristics of being thin, light-weight and producing very little heat, OLEDs are the perfect back-light illumination for signs.
